| DESCRIPTION OF WORK: |
Teamed up with Skanska USA, the Fremont Central Park Subway project is phase I of BART’s overall Warm Springs Extension. The extension will add 5.4 miles of new tracks from the existing Fremont Station south to a new station in the Warm Springs District of the City of Fremont. The project consists of performing all necessary work to construct 1.5 miles of the new BART line consisting of approximately 0.95 miles of subway. The contract work runs from Walnut Avenue in Fremont to Paseo Padre Parkway. The subway will begin between the South Tule Pond, just south of Walnut Avenue, and Stevenson Blvd. It will travel underneath Stevenson Blvd, Fremont Central Park and Lake Elizabeth and will transition above ground east of Lake Elizabeth near the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. The project faces many restrictions due to its location in Fremont Central Park and its proximity to environmentally sensitive areas. The Park will remain in full function for the duration of the contract and the public will be allowed continued access to the Softball Fields and Lake Elizabeth. Due to environmental and flood plane time restrictions, coordination between areas and scope of work with the weather and seasons will be necessary for the Joint Venture to complete the project. Prior to beginning major work on the subway, the existing Dog Park and basketball courts in Fremont Central Park will be relocated to the opposite side of the Softball Fields. Once complete, the Joint Venture will begin mass excavation across Stevenson Blvd. for the subway structure. During this time, traffic will be temporarily detoured and controls and signals will be modified. The proposed structures to be built include the 0.95 miles of cut and cover subway, 2 BART ventilation structures, retaining walls and 3 pump structures. An extensive water proofing system, fire protection, and system-wide conduits are to the installed for the structures. A combination of CDSM and sheet piles will be used for excavation support. For excavation in Lake Elizabeth a coffer dam will be installed and the eastern lobe will be dewatered. Finally, the Union Pacific Railroad mainline track will be demolished and relocated adjacent to the existing tracks. The remaining work includes landscaping and irrigation, utility installation, fencing, lighting, earthwork embankments, paving and drainage systems. |
