Shimmick Construction and Shimmick/Obayashi win top AGC Safety AwardsMay 13, 2009
At the 22nd Annual AGC of California Safety Awards, Shimmick Construction was awarded Safety Excellence on a High Hazard project for Big Tujunga Dam, 1st Place Safety Award of Excellence for 200,001-500,000 worker hours (Shimmick/Obayashi), and 1st Place Safety Award of Excellence for 500,000-1,000,000 worker hours (Shimmick) for the Heavy Civil/Highway categories.

FEATURED PROJECT

Featured Project

Teamed up with the Obayashi Corporation, this project is part A of the last phase to seismically retrofit the Golden Gate Bridge and includes retrofit work on the North Anchorage Housing and North Pylon.

Prior to retrofitting the Housing and the Pylon, non-soil surfaces inside Housing and inside and around the Pylon must be abated by non-abrasive and abrasive methods and subsequently power washed; contaminated overlaying material will be removed, off-hauled and disposed at licensed landfills. Retrofit of the Housing substructure includes adding in-filled transverse shear walls; strengthening foundation by installing micropiles at shear wall foundations, installing rock bolts on the vertical faces of rock slopes and enlarging concrete footings; strengthening the existing east and west interior housing walls. Retrofit of the superstructure includes removing and replacing 20,000 square feet of the roadway deck with 78 precast concrete roadway deck units; removing and replacing 12,750 square feet of the east and west sidewalk decks; placing asphalt concrete overlay; and installing a new maintenance traveler system. Rough terrain inside the Housing requires an equipment trestle to be constructed and installed at 40 feet above ground to facilitate the installation of a roadway deck temporary support structure (RDTSS), which supports the bridge deck while sidewalk and road deck are being replaced.

Retrofit work at the North Pylon consists of excavation and disposal of contaminated soil; strengthening sections of the north and south walls of the Pylon legs with an external concrete-covered structural steel plate system; installing foundation micropiles and concrete anchor blocks at the east Pylon leg; placing concrete backfill at the west Pylon leg; and installing transverse cable guides on the east and west main cables.

Over the course of the project, approximately 11,000 tons of contaminated soil and 1,200 cubic yards of rock will be excavated and disposed; 2,200 lineal feet of micropiles will be installed; 3,700 lineal feet of rock bolts will be installed; 860,000 pounds of reinforcing steel will be placed; 28,000 dowels/anchors will be drilled and bonded; 4,200 cubic yards will be poured; 120,000 square feet of formwork will be constructed; 2,000,000 lbs of steel will be furnished and erected; and 1,000,000 lbs of steel will be disassembled.

Several challenges on this project include difficult access to work area; obtaining field measurements of existing structure; coordinating retrofit work between the substructure and superstructure; and ensuring the bridge is open on time to the crossing of more than 100,000 vehicles daily.
